Frequently asked questions

Who pays me?

Mitacs sends the full award to your post-secondary school, which pays you. You are not on the company’s payroll.

Can international students apply?

Yes, with a valid study or work permit. You must be in Canada for the whole internship. We’ll help you confirm the details for your situation.

I don’t have a professor to supervise me. Can I still apply?

Yes. Every Mitacs internship needs an academic supervisor. Mitacs arranges one in coordination with your university.

How long is an internship?

Internships run in 4-month units and can be extended in 4-month steps depending on the project.

Can I apply if I’ve already graduated?

It depends on your school. Mitacs allows recent graduates to take part within two years of finishing their program, but not every college or university accepts graduates for Mitacs internships. Check with your institution’s research office, or email us and we’ll help you find out.

What happens after I register?

We review your profile, and when a founder’s project fits your skills we introduce you. Your profile stays in the pool for 12 months, and we’ll check in each term to update your availability.
